Common Sports Medicine Conditions for Adolescent Athletes

Adolescence is a time of significant growth and development that can make young athletes more susceptible to certain sports injuries. This includes injuries to the growth plates. Growth plates are the areas of cartilage at the ends of long bones where new bone growth occurs. Because growth plates are weaker than bones, they are susceptible to injury, especially in young athletes.

Some of the most common sports medicine injuries and conditions in adolescents include:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and meniscus tears
  • Fractures, including stress fractures
  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), and Little League elbow
  • Growth plate injuries, including Sever’s disease (heel pain)
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Jumper’s knee (patellar tendonitis)
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease (knee pain)
  • Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement
  • Sprains and dislocations
  • Strains, including hip flexor strains

Treatment for a sports injury or orthopedic condition in an adolescent will vary depending on the severity of the injury. It may involve nonsurgical solutions, from casting, splinting, or bracing to physical therapy. Treatment plans may also include surgery.

At Tri-County Orthopedics, we understand the importance of sports in a young person's life. Our team will work closely with you and your athlete to create a personalized treatment plan that gets them back on the field, court, or track—stronger than ever.
