Instead, a local anesthetic numbs the surgical area, keeping you comfortable and alert throughout the procedure. Additionally, a special numbing medication combined with a medication to control bleeding allows the surgeon to operate without using a tourniquet, which is an inflatable device that restricts blood flow to the arm.

The wide-awake hand surgery procedure also has certain advantages, such as:
