Wide-Awake Hand Surgery

Hand Pain

For a faster, more comfortable approach to hand surgery, Tri-County Orthopedics is proud to offer innovative wide-awake hand surgery procedures. Also known as WALANT (wide-awake local anesthesia, no tourniquet) hand surgery, this advanced technique allows you to remain awake during your procedure, offering several advantages over traditional methods. Board-certified hand and orthopedic surgeon with specialized fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery Dr. Jonathan Shearin will determine if a patient is a qualified candidate for this surgery.

What Is Wide-Awake Hand Surgery?

Wide-awake hand surgery is a groundbreaking approach that eliminates the need for general anesthesia or sedation. Instead, a local anesthetic numbs the surgical area, keeping you comfortable and alert throughout the procedure. Additionally, a special numbing medication combined with a medication to control bleeding allows the surgeon to operate without using a tourniquet, which is an inflatable device that restricts blood flow to the arm.

The wide-awake hand surgery procedure also has certain advantages, such as:

  • No fasting required
  • No IV or general anesthesia necessary
  • Patient is allowed to drive to and from the clinic for the procedure

Who Is a Candidate for Wide-Awake Hand Surgery?

Not everyone is a candidate for wide-awake hand surgery, and your surgeon will ultimately determine if it is a suitable option for you. In general, wide-awake hand surgery can be used for many common hand and wrist surgeries, including:

  • Trigger finger release
  • Mass excision
  • Tendon release
  • Many other procedures

What to Expect With Wide-Awake Hand Surgery

In addition to providing minimal disruption to your daily routine, you can expect the following during your convenient, in-office hand procedure:

  • You will be awake and alert throughout the procedure.
  • A local anesthetic numbs the surgical site.
  • You will likely feel some pressure or tugging during the surgery.
  • A drape will block the view of the surgical field.
  • Communication with your surgeon is encouraged throughout the procedure.

After your wide-awake hand surgery, you'll go home with pain medication and a bandage or splint to protect your hand, and you can drive yourself. Physical therapy exercises might be recommended to regain strength and mobility. Follow-up appointments with your surgeon will ensure proper healing progress.
