Ankle Sprains
An ankle sprain is a very common and easily incurred injury. It is so common that approximately 25,000 people sprain their ankle every day. Ligaments in the ankle hold the bones together and protect the ankle joint from turning, twisting, and rolling. Most ankle sprains are minor, or Grade 1 sprains, in which the ligament is stretched slightly out of its normal boundaries. Grade 2 sprains are partial tearing of the ligament and the complete tear of it is considered a Grade 3 sprain. A physician can diagnose what kind of sprain it is during an examination.
Athletes, as well as people who don’t participate athletics, experience ankle sprains frequently. For those who don’t participate in sports, simply stepping down on an uneven surface could cause an ankle sprain. Tri-County Orthopedics recommends patients to rest, elevate, and ice the injured ankle to reduce pain and inflammation.
