Injured lacrosse player returned to play thanks to fellow lacrosse alum, Tri-County Orthopedics' surgeon
Recent studies show that during practices and games, young athletes are sustaining hits as hard as those sustained by athletes at the high school, collegiate and even professional levels.
Such was the case for 14-year-old Kyle Gibson, whose collision with another player during a lacrosse game last spring left him with a severely broken collarbone and no mobility in his shoulder.
“I couldn’t move my arm at all,” Gibson says.
Gibson was fortunate to have former Yale lacrosse player and Tri-County Orthopedics’ sports medicine doctor, Stephen A. Hunt, M.D., available to assist with his injury and treatment. As a 4-year collegiate lacrosse player, Dr. Hunt was able to provide unique insight into Gibson’s condition.
“I understood Kyle’s desire to return to play quickly,” Dr. Hunt explains. “When discussing treatment options with him and his parents, Kyle’s ability to return to the field was a deciding factor.”
Following successful collarbone repair surgery in May and a three-month recovery period, Kyle was able to rejoin his team for the fall lacrosse league in September.
