Local Teen Recovers From Ski Accident After ACL Repair With Dr. David Epstein

Sofia S., a vibrant local 17-year-old, is passionate about marching band, dance, theater, ski racing, and music. Her active lifestyle came to a halt after an accident in a ski race.

“Her skis came off, and she tried so hard to get them back on so she could finish the race, but eventually they took her down the hill in the sled,” recalled Sofia’s mom, Petya S. The medical team at Hidden Valley provided first-response care and recommended she follow up with a doctor. They were told it was likely a sprain but to get an appointment with an orthopedic specialist if the pain persisted. Unfortunately, Sofia still had pain later in the week.

Despite the initial shock and fear of missing out on the rest of the skiing season, Sofia and her family found comfort in the expertise of dual-fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Epstein. Dr. Epstein suspected an ACL tear right away.

“He was so pleasant and thorough,” said Petya. ”He knew within seconds that there was a 90% chance her ACL might be torn. He recommended an MRI, which confirmed the tear.”

Sofia underwent a successful ACL repair surgery using the BEAR® Implant, a revolutionary medical device that helps the ACL repair itself. Dr. Epstein and his team provided exceptional care, making Sofia feel comfortable and at ease throughout the process. The positive experience extended beyond the surgery, with the care team providing excellent support during her recovery.

“Dr. Epstein and his team were absolutely amazing! They were so pleasant during such a stressful time for her,” Petya added. “They knew how to make her comfortable before her surgery, made jokes with her. She really felt like she was in good hands—and so did we!”

Sofia's recovery process involved physical therapy, the use of a CPM machine, and a brief period of crutch use. Despite the challenges, she remained determined and optimistic. Her physical therapists not only helped her regain strength but also became supportive friends.

Today, Sofia is thriving. She has returned to her favorite activities, including marching band, with a newfound appreciation for her health and the importance of proper care.

“Sofia is feeling so much better!” Petya said. “She is ready to go back to skiing; she is so excited and so very grateful for Dr. Epstein and his team's professionalism.”
