Local athletic trainer, Stephen Spezio of The Pingry School, named regional nominee for The 2017 – 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award

Stephen Spezio, MS, ATC, CSCS, certified athletic trainer at The Pingry School, has been named the regional nominee for The 2017 – 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. 

In partnership with local leading orthopaedic practices, such as Tri-County Orthopedics in Cedar Knolls, Bedminster, Livingston and Sparta, The 2017 – 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. Based on examples of service, leadership and shared experiences from community members, nominees for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award are determined regionally. Over 50 exceptional shared experiences from community members were received in support of Spezio’s regional nomination for the National Award. 

“The outpouring of support from members of our local athletic community on behalf of Mr. Spezio has been heart-warming and certainly well-deserved,” says Dr. Stephen Hunt, sports medicine surgeon with Tri-County Orthopedics. “Partnering with The Newell Award has allowed us to take part in honoring our best local athletic trainers for their service and leadership, and we’re proud to be able to recognize Stephen for his hard work.”

Spezio, a certified local athletic trainer and health educator for the community and The Pingry School, received his bachelor of science degree in biology from Seton Hall University in South Orange, where he went on to earn his master of science degree in athletic training. He also completed internships in athletic training at Chatham High School, Toms River High School South, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Seton Hall University, and he has been extremely involved in the sports medicine community for many years, caring for injured athletes and educating future athletic trainers through his work.
