Dr. Robert D’Agostini helps local retiree live pain-free with Oxford® Partial Knee replacement
While on a vacation road trip, retired commercial real estate broker and New Jersey native Jim Fraser suddenly felt extreme pain in his right knee. The same knee had been troubling Fraser for over 25 years, but this pain was different, and it became increasingly distressing.
“I thought I must have twisted it or done something to it,” recalls Fraser. “Every day, it got worse. At the end of my vacation, it was truly a mystery, because I’d only been driving every day.”
After two weeks, the pain had improved, but Fraser was still experiencing significant discomfort, indicating a chronic, degenerative condition. “So, I went to Dr. Robert D’Agostini, and he examined me and did an X-ray of my knee,” says Fraser. “He showed me that the cartilage had worn out on the inside of my right knee and said that’s what was causing my pain.
“Dr. D’Agostini gave me a corticosteroid shot to treat the pain and said, ‘See if this helps you, but let me know if you feel you’re ready for an operation.’” Tri-County Orthopedics’ doctors always advocate for nonsurgical treatments before recommending surgery, but the soft-tissue deterioration in Fraser’s knee was progressive. “My knee was better, but it wasn’t where I wanted it to be. A couple of days later, I called him and said, ‘I’m ready.’”
Before scheduling Fraser’s procedure for January, Dr. D’Agostini gave Fraser exercises to do, which, he said, helped him a lot. The exercises were so effective in relieving his pain that Fraser questioned going through with the procedure. However, he understood his knee wasn’t going to heal completely and the damage would continue to accrue.
“I didn’t want to be 85, going to the hospital for this procedure and knowing I should’ve done it 10 years earlier,” Fraser says of his final decision to proceed with the minimally invasive Oxford Partial Knee replacement.
He left the hospital in Morristown the same day as his procedure and went out to lunch with his wife that afternoon. He adds, “I never had any pain at all. I never used a cane or walking stick. I’ve been up and walking since I left the hospital.”
Three months post operation, Fraser is back to feeling like his old self and walking normally. “I feel great,” he says. “It’s absolutely remarkable.”
